Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Families,

I hope that you are having a wonderful summer and taking the time to recharge and relax from a busy school year. We have had a successful opening to our wonderful new building; Bob and Lola Sanford Elementary School. Everyday I count my blessing to walk into this building with this amazing staff and group of children that we serve, as it's Principal.  I could not be more fortunate!

This year we are updating our theme from last year.  Last year we were focused on building the bridge of change from the original Elementary into two buildings and looking to start new identities for the both of us.  This year we will be making more of our own identity and student focus at Sanford.  So our new theme will be "Every Student is a Star at Sanford".  We are very excited to roll out this new look in our hallways and think this will be fun for our students as well. We will welcome you on the red carpet at Meet the Teacher Night, so expect a little Glam!

We have adopted a new English Language Arts Curriculum set of Materials at great expense to the district this year.  All of our teachers have been trained this summer in a 4 day training and we feel that these new materials add a strong reading component to our Language arts standards and will build strong readers starting in Kindergarten.  We will be setting Reading goals and talking to you about our Reading focus for the year and how parents can support and be an integral part in student success.

We have new staff members to share with you.  As you know we have added 5th grade to our school for the 2019-2020 school year.  Three teachers from the middle school are joining us: Myka Phillips, Math; Kathy Edmondson, Social Studies & ELAR; Krystal Harbert, Science and DeAnna Carroll will teach Reading.  We also have had a few teachers leave to take other positions.  Tonya Martin will be our full time Reading Interventionist and will be replace by Jeremy Sweeney in 4th Grade Science/Social Studies.  Jennifer McClellen will teacher 3rd Grade Math at Partin and will be replaced by Lauren Wilson-Fagala in 4th grade Reading.  Laura Benner left to teach in Howe and will be replace by Emily Nelson in 1st Grade.  We had to add an additional section of Kindergarten and that teacher is  Brandon Turney. Judy Riggs will be full time at Partin in Dyslexia and will be replaced by LaRissa Kemp.  Last but not least, we have hired a full time Assistant Principal, Shannon Keller.  We still have some support staff to hire and will continue to look for quality people for these positions.

I would like to thank you for sharing your children with us at Sanford.  I  am so excited about the quality of staff we were able to hire for your children.  I know that you will love them all!

I have spent time looking through all of the parent survey's and want to make appropriate changes and be responsive  to the concerns shared so that we continue to grow and meet the needs of our community.  We can always get better on a personal level and as a community who serves children and you the parents.  I am passionate about education and kids and know that we, (the staff, parents, and community members) can work together to provide a rich educational experience that will continue to make our school a great place to be every day.

I believe that we must continue to provide an educational program that is academically challenging, and engages each student by linking the curriculum to previous knowledge and experiences.

Parents, teachers, support staff, and administration all have an important role to facilitate and encourage our children to take charge of their education by becoming active learners.  Through a close partnership with everyone associated with Sanford Elementary School, I am confident that we will make our school a Premier School and even better place for our students to learn and grow.

Again, it is truly an honor to serve the children, families and staff members of Sanford Elementary School.  I look forward to an awesome school year.
